What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient system that balances the mind, body and spirit, which helps to maintain physical health while centering the ever-wandering mind. At Torus Center for Integrative Healing, clients in our care can utilize yoga as a part of their mental health treatment plan.

A yoga practice can contribute to the relief of anxiety, depression and stress. Yoga can help clients achieve a sense of balance and overall wellness. Our expertly qualified instructors are sensitive to physical and emotional needs of clients, adjusting the flow and intensity of each class to create a unique, personal experience.

Our belief at Torus is that yoga starts with the breath and reconnection to Self. From the breath and reconnection, we can rebuild physical, emotional and spiritual strength.

Yoga + Mental Health

At Torus, we connect Yoga and Mental Health because we believe the connection to the body and breath is integral in healing (the mind). We focus on the internal view of how the movement feels within (our clients or) the body versus the external expression of the perfect pose.

Our clients begin to rebuild their body sense that had been lost, to operate and connect to the present with purposeful attention to their physical self or postures. Through the use of focused breath they may begin to improve their ability to experience present-moment awareness. With this new awareness, our clients are able to recognize sensations in the body, deepen their breath and welcome emotions with self-regulation.

Helpful benefits of yoga for mental health patients include:

  • Relaxation
  • Enhanced mood
  • Improved quality of sleep
  • Increased energy and focus
  • Improvement of cardiovascular health
  • Improved respiration

During each session, our goal is to provide a space that allows for that connection, to bring our body awareness and breath into our sessions.

What to Expect

The goal of our first individual session is to ensure the client is comfortable in the space. We discuss any physical goals or limitations and aim to understand why yoga is of interest. We spend time on what you wish to feel or address during our time together/each session.

Each private session includes asana (forms/poses) pranayama (breath-work), and meditation. However, there is no standard class. Each week, prior to class, we contact our client to understand what is coming up for them in life or therapy so we can build a session to support their healing on the mat.
